Rising Popularity: Visitor Numbers Soar by 18% in Georgia's Top 5 Protected Areas

In 5 months of 2024, the most visited protected areas: Prometheus Cave, Martvili Canyon, Sataflia, Mtirala National Park and Tsalki Canyon, were visited by a total of 153,730 visitors, which is an increase of 18% compared to the same period last year.

The number of visitors to protected areas across Georgia has increased by 4% compared to last year. Among the visitors, 39% are Georgians, and 61% are citizens of other countries.

The Agency of Protected Areas of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture continues to develop ecotourism in the protected areas of Georgia, as a result of which visitors are met with appropriate infrastructure for safe and comfortable travel. This year, rehabilitation works were carried out in various protected areas.

By the end of the year, it is planned to build a network of hiking trails up to 690 km long in 8 protected areas and related ecotourism infrastructure, namely: Borjom-Kharagauli, Kintrishi-Mtirala, Kobuleti, Tbilisi, Tusheti-Pshav-Khevsureti-Kazbegi national parks. Also, the arrangement of the visitor center in Tbilisi National Park and the completion of new tourist infrastructure works adapted to disabled people in the protected areas of Kobuleti and others.
